I make excuses. It's all I seem to do when it comes to my art work. Well enough is enough. It has been quite some time since I lost my art studio but I still have my computer so I really need to buff up my illustration skills instead.

So that is what I have been doing. Slowly. I have never taken any classes or been shown how to use Adobe Illustrator, other than a 15 minute explenation on how to use the pen function by an ex girlfriend, but I cant use that as an excuse. Practice makes perfect and all that jazz. So here is what I have been up to since my last post. Not a lot I know but this is a new call to arms against my lazyness...again...

Ok so lately I haven't really done...well anything. I told myself I would take a break because I was just trying to give people what I believed they would want to see. I was more focused on becoming well know than I was actually doing it for fun.

Neil Gaiman's Coraline Movie

First off let me start with a few details.

1. Neil Gaiman wrote a book called Coraline
2. Henry Selik and the company Laika decided to animate a movie based on the book using stop motion
3. Promotions were arranged

Now one of the promotions was a collection of 50 boxes to be distributed around the world, each containing various items from the movie. I emailed Neil asking if any were available but after talking to Laika I was told they had all gone but I was to be sent one of "part two" of the promotion.
This is what arrived. No idea how many have been made but I have spotted a few around already.

Also my beautiful girlfriend decided to get hold of one of the Coraline keys for me which were nailed to a variety of places around the US.

Now I just have to wait for the movie to be released over here in the UK

The damage

A while back I received a DIY Stitch to paint for an exhibition ran by Disney and Mindstyle. At first I was exited when it arrived and ignored a HUGE dent in the back of the box which had done enough damage to snap the plastic packaging.

Unfortunately when I rotated the head the damage became clear as the head fell off.

No glue I have tried seems to be able to support the head and then I had to leave it so that it didn't further ruin the festive period.
I'm horrified at this but there's not much I can do.

To make matters worse I was going to take another crack at maybe making an internal structure to stick the head on but I took a fall this morning and badly sprained my wrist. It even hurts to up my computer mouse but I still managed to put together a new illustration so that I can atleast feel like I'm doing something other than look at the damage on the Stitch toy.

What you cant see here is the huge dent on the other side. He doesn't seem to be damaged though which is lucky.
I am hoping that I don't screw him up and manage to do a good job on him. I still class myself as being new to the DIY toy scene having only done a couple so I'm a bit nervous with this one.

It really is a gorgeous piece and I think I am upsetting my girlfriend by not keeping it but seeing as it was sent for the show it would be stealing to do so and I class myself as an honest person.

It's also a lot bigger than I thought it would be. I can't wait to start on him.

So there I am browsing the art of Mike Hoffman and I decide to pop him an email asking how much postage would be to the UK.

There was a bit of confusion when he replied (mostly from me thinking it was someone else) but in the end we got chatting and he mentioned his project underworld library and asks me if I could do an illustration for him of his character Minister Sinister.

Initially I agreed and told him I would get started after a good nights sleep but the more I looked at the character the more I really wanted to get started. There's something about Sinister I liked and as I was illustrating him I ended up liking him more and more. I hope that comes across.

Love suprises

So I have managed to go through probably £150-£200 in headphones in the last year alone. I keep buying pairs for £10 or £20 and after a month or so they just stop working in one side. Usually they flicker on and off on one side giving me a headache. This is due to one thing

I am clumsy

I tend to not be able to hold onto my ipod and keep going to drop it and catch it via the cable when trying to turn it off. Or I walk past doors and the cable catches onto the handle making me fall backwards with suprise. All these things mean the cable is wrenched so much it loses it's connection and breaks.

To counter this I treated myself to a pair of wireless headphones.

Not only are they extreemely comfortable but also, I didn't notice this when I bought them but they link via bluetooth to your phone as well if you set it up and you can answer calls using a fold out mic.

Now I don't know about you but I think this is the coolest thing ever. If the battery life wasn't just 6 hours I would never take them off but in the mean time it makes work a lot easier to bear as I can now talk and work at the same time and listen to music without worrying about damaging my ipod as I can leave it in a safe place while I work.

Small job for Topshop

Well alas it's not for the store itself but more for the staff room. In Rugby (yes the town where the sport was invented) the Topshop store was organizing a small insentive game for the staff to encourage the sales.

Luckily for me they decided to do this based on Superheroes. They had seen my work for the A-Z and wanted a few more made and printed.

Alas I forgot to take photos of the cut out card prints but once they are up on the walls I'll be sure to take some photos.
Apparently I'll get them back once they are finished with them but who knows in what condition.

As you might have noticed from the title of this post I'm feeling a bit disgusted with myself lately.
I have been watching various tallented artists grow around me and keep bumping into more and more of their works whilst out about the UK and on various websites and I can't help but feel that I'm holding myself back from growing as they are.

I tend to create one or two paintings and then decide to change everything about my style and doing nothing for a long time until the cycle repeats.

So what I have decided is I need to do more. Not the most detailed goal in the world but there you have it. If I'm not in the mood for canvases do illustrations. If not illustrations then custom toys etc. etc.

So I started on my 10" Mad*L today. So far I have the shape down so now onto the painting. I hate deciding what colors to use. I might make an illustration of it first to see what works.

Now all I need to do is cut out my computer game addiction. Some days I wish I never bought the 360, PS3 AND the Wii. It's just 3 distractions and artist doesn't need. Even on the PC World Of Warcraft is too much of a time sponge.

First off let me apologise for the A-Z. A few of the pieces were rushed due to the time constraint. I feel like I should mention I was not happy with quite a few of the pieces and wish I could have spent more time on them.
I think from now on I will avoid the "daily" label and if I am to do another project like this maybe make it every other day at least if not weekly.

Secondly I have an illustration where I managed to spend a bit more time on it.

Solomon Grundy is a fantastic character. I loved it when they had the "intelligent" Grundy especially.

Wait a minute.......I'm done?.......I'M DONE!!!!! THE A-Z IS OVER!!!!!! I don't know if I should weep with job or sadness. It was kind of fun to do this but at the same time I wish I hadn't laid down the daily limit. It really put a strain on my time management and I really had to rush a few (like this one)

I love Nightcrawler. He is by far my favorite X-Men character...well...him and Gambit. They both hold top possition and poor old Wolverine falls back a little in the list. Sorry Logan fans.
So when Phil Corbett made another request to have Kurt added to the list I was more than happy to oblige.

This is by far the most dynamic pose and backgound I have done so far. It's a shame I haven't been playing with the backgrounds more throughout this A-Z but oh well. You try to do 26 illustrations in the same style at a rate of one a day and we'll see what you come up with ;)

I had a bit of an odd dream last night.

It was a strange journey. Brief but uncomfortable. "It's not like there are any other paths" I thought to myself as I flew through the skies in an intangible form. I imagined how most people would wish for the ability to do what I was doing just then and I tried to see the humor in that but the discomfort reminded me I was in no mood to laugh about anything. It was horrible. Flying into other realms created a lot of friction. Not against skin but against the aura needed to accomplish the journey. It heated up creating a humid, near un breathable air which seemed to cling to the face more than anything. And the fact you need to be intangible, or "like a dream" I remember the old man telling me, meant that even though the cold air and heavy rain around me would have refreshed me in seconds not a single breeze or raindrop touched my skin. I began feeling sick. Not the sort where you felt like you were about to throw up but the sort where you knew you weren't going to which is ten times more frustrating. At least if you knew you were going to throw up there was an end in sight.
There was nothing around me but water, nearly white reflecting the clouds and mist that had landed on this plain eons ago and never left. It always reminded me of what heaven would look like if it was combined with a hillbilly related horror movie. I tried to remember parts of the Chainsaw Massacre when I spotted the floating forest in the distance. "Finally" I thought as my face relaxed from the scrunched up frown the humidity had called for.
The floating forest was pretty much what the name implies. A very, and I really do mean very, tall collection of trees in a circle that looked no wider than 20 feet in diameter which appeared to float, or at least be a very small island, in this strange sea.
I aimed for a gap in the trunks and landed with surprisingly sure footing on the ground within the forest. As I landed I breathed the air. "FINALLY". I was solid form again. The cold air flowed around me removing the remnants of the humidity that suffocated me not long ago. I shivered slightly. Not because I was cold but because of the sheer pleasure I derived from the crisp air within this place. "Rain" I remembered and looked up to the skies. The leaves of the trees, now appearing impossibly tall, created a heavy mesh holding the rain outside apart from the occasional drop which tended to land much further away than where I was standing. The light filtered through those leaves giving the entire place a green hue. It seemed larger inside than out, not only in height but in width as well. I stopped myself from walking around as I glanced at the floor. Just in front of my feet was a wide river covered in what looked like duckweed giving the illusion of solid ground. I became uncomfortably aware that the ground I stood on was a large, flat knot of vines. I imagined that underneath was nothing but water and my mind began playing tricks on me making me believe that the floor itself was moving slightly in the waves of the sea. This soon ended once I noticed the roots that weaved themselves through the vines in places proving there much be some sort of ground beneath.
From behind the trees a small boat floated towards where I stood. It appeared to be made of the same vines I stood on but the ones the boat was made of were dried out and gray in appearance, not green and swollen with water. It parted the duckweed and, almost as if it was being controlled, turned and stopped in an alcove which was at the perfect level to easily climb inside. My memory was returning now. I had been here before. As soon as both my feet were safely inside the boat and I had sat down the boat gently began to glide down the river into the next "room" as it was. The forest seemed to have very clear divides of areas as if it were man made. I remembered again.
The boat pulled up and stopped, allowing me to enter the next room. The river ended here and I knew this was my destination. The walls were draped with vertical vines in angles that must have been impossible to control but can't have happened naturally at the same time. It was a hexagonal room laid out like an art gallery. Old clocks on the wall that were mostly dead apart from the occasional pained and strained tick noise that didn't seem to do much other than to twitch the hands. The lights above that looked more plant and alchemy than technology had long ago burned out so that not even a flicker of light appeared. The center area of the room though was home to sculptures of art and architecture. Each one dust covered and old. Each one like nothing anyone has ever seen before. Like a representation of ideals and dreams. Ambitions and failures. More like the idea of something rather than the something itself. It was difficult to try to think about what they were but when you look at them and keep your mind clear you could easily tell what it was though as soon as you looked away you couldn't remember for the life of you what you knew a second ago.
I browsed the room with great enthusiasm for the subject. It was impossible to not be fascinated by each and every form. As I neared the center of the room I found the spiral stairs. They led down. Deep down. The boat had gone as I was unsure if it was going to return any time soon so I followed the downward path. It was a bland journey. The vines and roots ended and the hollow cylinder that held the spiral stairs became soil.
I got about half way down and a sign asked me if I wish to continue. I though and thought, exhausted from the journey so far and shouted "Not for now. Maybe another time"

My alarm sounded and I woke up and got ready for work.

I have never really been a huge fan of Captain America. To me he has a cheesy costume and doesn' really have any superpowers as such. Just "better than any human" but I assume we aren't counting Mutants and Aliens etc. who would, in that case, all be much better than him having Super-Human-Powers.
To be honest I have no idea what I'm talking about. I have never really read a Captain America comic so I can't slate him too much. Also I'm enduring my ussual Sunday hangover, which is odd because although I was drinking all through last night I never really felt drunk. Great night though.

I decided to base this design on the latest incarnation of Ultron and found a picture online but whilst getting the shapes and things from his face I realized I had screwed up and made him look more like a weird animal thing. Problem was...I liked it. So I decided not to change it and so now this is my version of Ultron.

My god I stuggled with making a decent list of powers. I swear everything begins with I or S. So I botched a few together and now I present you with

THE A-Z OF SUPERPOWERS

I'm going to try to make one a day but it will probably end up more like one every two or three days due to other projects.

Today we begin with (obviously) the letter A

Good old Beast. I decided to go for this verion of Beast rather than the original hairless version. Gotta love the blue fur.
For the rest of the illustrations I have some villains, some marvel, some DC, and generally am hoping I don't get sued for the temporary theft of these characters.

If there is enough enjoyment in this project I plan to maybe make a limited edition set of postcards of the whole alphabet.

"Bug Catcher"

The tribe has an innocence that is there for all to see. In this latest piece "Bug Catcher" I wanted to show that innocence and intrigue.

It took a lot longer than I wanted it to due to rain and wind making it impossible to get the stencils down for the background. Once I had that painting the character seemed like a really relaxing experience.

I'll definitely be working with this style more

I wish I had a scanner or a digital SLR because the flash ruins the photos and without it I get a lot of blur. The background is laced with a lot of purple that you can't see very well unless you see it in person.

Work In Progress

Lately I have been tweeking my style a lot. I went from a style that involved no backgrounds and only characters to going for a very dark forest look. Then I jumped to a shocking level of bright colors and solid shapes.

Now I have finally found a balance. Strong characters, detailed backdrops, solid shapes and a dark feel.

Every now and then a small fad sweeps flickr.com where everyone in my friends list decides to go onto the same website and create an avatar. The only ones I seem to be able to remember right now are the Simpsons and South Park ones but now the latest is Faceyourmanga.com

Now having an average nose, eyes, head shape, etc, and shaving my head to boot I have always had a bit of a "Mannequin" look. In fact I have been mistaken for one when I was shopping in Topman once and scared the crap out of two women and their child by moving slightly (I must stand very still when eying up tshirts)
The problem with this is I went onto the faceyourmanga site, clicked "create", clicked "male" and up popped an almost mirror image of me. Done. I am the starter face for that site. So I added a bit of stubble and a smile and piercings just to finnish it up and make a little bit of effort but it really did suck the fun out of it a bit.

Wraith Light tribute

Another friend of mine, Bill Murphy, did me a huge favor by keeping an eye out for me at the SDCC for a toy I had my heart set on. Alas it was the Black Koiboto by Yoskay Yamamoto. After trying the raffle 3 times for me and still being unable to get a chance to buy one (I would probably have given up after 1) he finally had to give up to hunt for other treasures. I really did appreciate the effort though.

As a thank you I decided to do a quick illustration of Wraith Light. Bill is currently manufacturing his own line of super hero action figures including a really cool DIY figure, which if you're a fan of City of Heroes or Superheroes in general you have to love.
One of the characters, and my personal fav, is Wraith Light.

Cold Stone

A friend of mine who I work with, Ice, is a fantastic guitar player and recently started up an 80's rock tribute band called Cold Stone.
As a favor (and a crate of Bud beer) I made him this logo. I tell you what, it was a pain in the arse to come up with a logo for the name "Cold Stone" seeing as all that sprang to mind was ice cream.

New toy

So lately the weather has been aweful. I have been wanting to paint for quite some time but I need to create some backgrounds first for which I use spray paints. And not having a garage or shed means I need to wait for good weather so I can spray outdoors.

All in all I have been a bit depressed not being able to vent my artistic flare in any way so as a result I decided to cheer myself up with a gift to myself.

Apparently though I can't get an iphone until my contract runs out in april 09 so I decided to go for the next best thing. An ipod touch.

And just to really cheer myself up and "bling" myself up I decided to have the thing gold plated in 24ct.

Obviously the gadget is scratched within the first hour and I'm shocked at the battery life
but it really is beautiful. The reflection is crystal in the gold and the touch screen has imaculate precision. All in all a worthy purchase.

Fat Chunk Comic

A while back now I received an email from Jamie Smart (Most famous for his comics "Bear") stating he was gathering artists to create a collaborative comic book featuring a collection of different artists, each contributing work based on a theme.
The theme for the first issue was Robots and was to be published by Slave Labor Graphics

How could I say no.

I'm not 100% happy with my contribution and think I could have done a lot better but alas at the time I had a dying PC and it's only been recently I have bought Adobe Illustrator so I did the best I could.

Either way it is now released and available to buy via Amazon (UK for £8.50) (USA for $11.01)

So I finally finished my painting. I am using spray paints for the background and acrylics for the foreground. Personally I like it though it is a LOT less dark than my earlier stuff.

Knife troubles

Yes this is my hand.
Yes that is a cut on my finger going through a chunk of my fingernail.
Yes it feels like Satan spat into an open wound.

I was cutting out some stencils for my latest painting after getting exited about the prospect of playing with all my new spray paints. Alas fait decided I was a bit too happy so decided to make me slip with the new blade and I went throught my fingernail.

This photo was taken today but the damage was done yesterday. The bruising has come through and the bleeding has stopped which is good. My hand was covered at first making Tish think I had sliced my palm open.

I hope it heals soon

I love the guys and gals down at fat buddha. I have decided to go back to spray paints to make the back drops of my paintings so popped onto their site and pilfered their stock.

With their next day delivery hopefully I'll be able to have a play so you can see what I've been up to.
